Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia or Vera)

Lavender oil is perhaps the most widely used essential oil and Bulgarian lavender oil is often as highly regarded on the global market as Bulgarian rose oil.  Native to the Mediterranean region, the lavender plant has found a perfect home in the mountainous areas and higher altitude valleys of Bulgaria.  The climate in these parts of Bulgaria has proven especially beneficial to the cultivation of lavender containing a high percentage of essential oil.

It is no coincidence that the word for lavender stems from the Latin verb lavare – to wash.  Throughout history, burning lavender has been used as a method of disinfecting houses and clothes during epidemics.  In the 17th and 18th centuries lavender waters and essences became a fashion craze among Western European aristocratic ladies, who used them against unpleasant odors and fainting.

Today lavender oil is an established treatment for respiratory problems, nervous disorders, headaches and insomnia. Lavender oil is also a pain reliever used for rheumatism, arthritis, lumbago and muscular aches and pains.

The benefits of lavender oil for the skin are also many.  Natural healers commonly use it to treat abscesses, acne, oily skin, burns, wounds, psoriasis, lice and insect bites.  Lavender oil is an excellent insect repellent.

Another application of lavender oil is in heavy industries, where it is used as a solvent for metal oxides, salts, lacquers and dyes.
